Star Spangled Flag Cake

STAR SPANGLED FLAG CAKE

Ingredients
2 box red velvet cake mix
1 box white cake mix
2 containers white frosting (vanilla or cream cheese)

Directions
Bake red velvet cake as directed on box in 9" round pans (you will need 4 total).

When cake is baked and cooled, cut each round into two layers for a total of 8 thin layers. Set aside.

For the blue layer, add blue food coloring when mixing as directed on box and bake in a 6" round pan to form one thick layer, (you will have leftover from this batter, just bake it up in a separate pan and enjoy it later). Cool and set aside

Center the first red layer on plate, frost top, add next red layer and continue until you have a stack of 8 layers.  Take the pan you baked the blue layer in and cut out the center of the top 3 layers forming a large hole. Set aside

Blue cake, lightly frost the sides then drop into the hole you made in the red layers. Frost top and sides to finish.  Take your leftover frosting and divide it in half into two small bowls. Color one red and one blue. Pipe circles around the top of the cake, first red then blue and repeat, you should have 3 circles of each color on top of the cake.

Take the tip of a knife, insert it about 1/8 inch into the frosting starting at the center and draw it outward across the circles. Start on the outside and draw it toward the center for the next slice. Repeat drawing center to outside and outside to center until all slices are marked.  You can skip this step if you want, it will still look wonderful when you slice it.
